Rev. Dr Wesley Hill Appointed Associate Professor of New Testament

TORONTO—Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr Wesley Hill as Associate Professor of New Testament. The appointment becomes effective August 1, 2026.

The announcement comes after a months-long international search, undertaken by a committee representing students, faculty, the Wycliffe College Board of Trustees, the Toronto School of Theology, and the University of Toronto.

Ordained a priest in The Episcopal Church, Dr Hill is a New Testament scholar who is deeply committed to the theological interpretation of Scripture, a way of reading the Bible as the Word of the triune God, centred on the person of Jesus Christ. Dr Hill comes to Wycliffe from his position as Associate Professor of New Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan—an evangelical, ecumenical community of faith and learning. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (with a major in Ancient Languages and a minor in Bible and Theology) from Wheaton College, a Master of Arts in Theology and Religion from Durham University, and a Doctor of Philosophy, also from Durham University. His doctoral work was published as Paul and the Trinity: Persons, Relations, and the Pauline Letters (Eerdmans, 2015). A member of the Society of Biblical Literature, Dr Hill has also served as an editorial board member of the “Journal of Theological Interpretation” and written a range of journal articles and essays.

Dr Hill is regularly published in popular publications such as “Christianity Today” and “The Living Church,” as well as serving as a contributing editor of “Comment Magazine.” He won “Christianity Today’s” Beautiful Orthodoxy Award of Merit for his 2016 book Spiritual Friendship. Other books include Easter: The Season of the Resurrection of Jesus (InterVarsity Press, 2025), The Lord’s Prayer: A Guide to Praying to Our Father (Lexham, 2019), and Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality (Zondervan, 2016). Dr Hill has numerous books under contract, including a theological commentary on the Johannine Epistles (Bloomsbury/T. & T. Clark).

He has lectured and taught at numerous Christian colleges and seminaries, including serving as a visiting professor at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C., Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Man., and Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin, USA.

“Over multiple generations, Wycliffe has cultivated an intellectually serious and evangelically vibrant approach to Christian education and formation,” Dr Hill says. “I am excited to join an institution with this history and, hopefully, to contribute to its continuance.”

“Dr Hill believes deeply in investing in community and is eager to be a part of the life of the College,” says Wycliffe principal Dr Kristen Deede Johnson. “He has shared that he also looks forward to being involved in the local church as one way of embodying his call to ordained ministry in the Anglican church. He is eager to be in an Anglican context, even as his roots in the broader evangelical tradition have prepared him to teach and walk alongside students from a range of backgrounds.”

“We look forward to extending a warm welcome to Dr Hill,” says vice principal and academic dean Dr Justin Stratis, “as he joins the Wycliffe community, knowing he will help to expand and deepen the college's historic commitment to forming students to be ever more confident in the gospel and in the enduring authority of the Holy Scriptures.”
