Electives

Students can take a maximum of 9-10 elective courses at Wycliffe College or any other Toronto School of Theology member college. You also have the option to focus on your studies by selecting from one of the concentrations below:

  • Biblical Studies
  • Theological Studies

Summative Project / Thesis

MTS students will write a summative project for 2 credits or choose the thesis option for 3 credits.

 

Eligibility

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (or equivalent).

English proficiency

Students who have not completed a previous degree in English must demonstrate proficiency through a recognized language exam. For more information, see our international students page or contact our admissions office.

Application deadlines*

June 30 – for a Fall start (September)
October 31 – for a Winter start (January)

*International applicants are encouraged to apply at least eight weeks before the posted deadlines to ensure adequate time for processing study permits. 

Domestic MDiv and MDiv Hybrid Fees (2024-2025)

  • Tuition per course: $602.00
  • Full-time ancillary fee (4 or more courses): $1216.3 per term
  • Part-time ancillary fee (3 or fewer courses): $276.04 per term

International MDiv and MDiv Hybrid Fees (2024-2025)

  • Tuition per course: $2875.00
  • Full-time ancillary fee (4 or more courses): $1216.3 per term
  • Part-time ancillary fee (3 or fewer courses): $276.04 per term
  • University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP): $756.00 per academic year

Complete the MTS through 2 years of full-time study or extended up to 8 years, depending on your pace and needs.*

  • Students may switch between full-time and part-time formats by term.
  • Online, summer, and intensive courses are regularly offered. Much of the MTS can be completed without relocating to Toronto.
  • If you are a working professional taking this program on the side, you can consider registering for 1 credit per term (Fall, Winter, Summer). It will take about 6-8 years to complete the degree. 

Summative exercise / thesis

Students can choose one of the following options:

  • An integration paper
  • A survey of literature 
  • A field-based project
  • An extended research paper
  • A thesis (3 credits)

Combined MTS/MDiv

It is possible to combine your MTS with an MDiv. Contact the admissions office about your options.

 

*To remain as an active student, simply register for at least 1 credit each academic year, during any term—Fall, Winter, or Summer, with the exception of Approved Leave of Absence. For more information, see Registration Procedures & Policy.

What Will I Prepare For?

The Master of Theological Studies (MTS) program is designed to be our most versatile degree, catering to a range of academic, professional and personal aspirations. Whether you are preparing for a career in ministry, pursuing roles in non-profit organizations, engaging in marketplace mission, or seeking to enrich your own faith and understanding, the MTS offers the flexibility to meet your goals. This program equips you with the theological knowledge and practical skills needed to make a meaningful impact in various contexts, or simply to deepen your personal journey of faith.

Qualifying for Doctoral Study

Students who achieve an "A-" average and develop an academic focus with a thesis during their program may use the MTS to qualify for doctoral (PhD) study at the Toronto School of Theology.*

*Note that the DMin has different entry requirements.
