OPTION I: Courses plus thesis
Option I requires six courses (5000-, 6000-, or 7000-level), of which four are in the area of major interest and two in other areas; and a thesis in the area of major interest. This option may serve to qualify a student for doctoral studies within the TST. For language requirements and further information, see the ThM Handbook (section 3 - Requirements for admission).
OPTION II: Course-Based Option
Option II requires eight courses, of which six are in the area of major interest and two in other areas, and at least half of which are at the advanced level; and an extended essay resulting from one of the courses. Language requirements depend on the area of specialization. The aim of Option II is scholarly enhancement or disciplined reflection on a specialized function in ministry. This option will not qualify a student for doctoral studies within the TST.
Areas of Study
Each ThM student works in one of four program areas:
1) Biblical Studies
2) Historical Studies
3) Pastoral and Practical Theology
4) Theological Studies
See the ThM Handbook for further details.
What Will I Prepare For?
The Master of Theology (ThM) program is intended for advanced and specialized theological study beyond the basic degree level. Coursework is at the doctoral level, but the ThM is a much shorter program than the conjoint PhD program, and it does not require full-time study. It serves a variety of aims, including advanced theological research, preparation for some forms of teaching, preparation for doctoral study, the scholarly enhancement of the practice of ministry, and disciplined reflection on a specialized function in ministry.
Qualifying for Doctoral Study
Students interested in doctoral study should pursue Option I (Thesis) of the ThM. ThM students who achieve at least A- (3.7/4.0 cumulative GPA) standing are qualified to apply to the Toronto School of Theology doctoral program. See doctoral eligibility requirements for further details.
