TORONTO—Wycliffe College is pleased to announce that Dr Mark Elliott, Professorial Fellow, has been appointed to Full Status at the Graduate Centre for Theological Studies at the Toronto School of Theology. This new designation means that he is now available to supervise students doing doctoral research in the fields of Patristics, Historical Theology and Biblical Interpretation, and biblical-theological hermeneutics here at Wycliffe.
In addition to his role at the College, Dr Elliott is Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism at Glasgow University. A former Assistant Director at the Whitfield Institute in Oxford, he has held teaching posts at Nottingham University, Liverpool Hope University College and, most recently, at St. Andrews University, where he taught for fifteen years. While there he served for three years as the Head of the School of Divinity. He is a contributor to the La Bible et ses traditions project, based at L’Ecole Biblique, Jerusalem, and is co-editor of the monograph series: Studies in the History of Biblical Exegesis (Mohr Siebeck) and chair of the History of Interpretation section at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature.
Dr Elliott is the author of eight books, including Providence: a biblical theology (Baker, 2020); The Reality of Biblical Theology (Peter Lang, 2008); Isaiah 40-66 in the Ancient Christian Commentary Series (IVP, 2007); and The Song of Songs and Christology in the Early Church, (Mohr Siebeck, 2000). His newest book, Theological Commentary on the Psalms (Continuum-T&T Clark: ITC) is due out soon. He has published numerous book chapters and articles for such reference works as Das Handbuch der Bibelhermeneutiken, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Theology, The Oxford Handbook of Christology, The New Cambridge History of the Bible, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Biblical Interpretation, and The Cambridge Dictionary of Christian Theology. Of the nine books he has co-edited, the most recent is the three-volume A History of Scottish Theology (OUP, 2020), produced with David Fergusson.
Professor Elliott holds a BA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, a BD from Aberdeen University and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. In demand as a speaker internationally, he has lectured in Canada, the US, Australia, and across Europe, and has been a Humboldt Scholar in Germany. He is a regular participant in Wycliffe College’s Scripture and Theology Colloquia and is active in the Graduate Centre for Theological Studies at the Toronto School of Theology.
