TORONTO—Following an international search conducted over nearly five months, Wycliffe College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Justin Stratis as its new Professor of Theology. Dr Stratis will take up the position August 1, 2021.
In his ninth year as Tutor in Christian Doctrine at Trinity College Bristol in the UK, Dr Stratis has the intellectual energy of a young scholar combined with the wisdom of an older one. With a strong research record, personal warmth, deep faith, and commitment to the Church and its mission, he is an ideal fit for Wycliffe College. He demonstrated an impressive ability to communicate creatively and accessibly during the interview process. “What stands out to me about Dr Stratis is his commitment to students’ formation, both intellectual and spiritual,” said search committee member and Wycliffe student, Susie Kim. “He exudes the sense that teaching theology is not just his work, but his vocation, one that can only be an outpouring of his own faith and prayer life. And this is very exciting!”
Dr Stratis has a strong research record and, theologically, he carries on a trajectory at Wycliffe that dates as far back as Oliver O’Donovan and the late John Webster, whose student he was. At the same time, he brings a fresh approach to contemporary theology with interests in, among other things, Theology and Race, Romanticism, and Hip Hop music. “We believe that Dr Stratis will play an important role in the emergence of our Centre for Scripture and Theology,” said Wycliffe Principal Stephen Andrews, “and will make the College even more attractive as a place for serious doctoral research.”
“Justin impressed us with his seriousness about Holy Scripture and his commitment to theological interpretation as a discipline of the church,” said Professor Joseph Mangina. “He will make a splendid addition to the Wycliffe faculty.” For his part, Dr Stratis says, “I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to serve the community at Wycliffe College. The many challenges faced by the church today cry out for robust theological education with an eye toward courageous, costly obedience to Christ in the world, and so I am profoundly grateful for Wycliffe’s commitment to just this sort of ministry. What an honour to join such a remarkable group of fellow disciples.”
“We look forward to welcoming Dr Stratis together with his wife, Melissa, and their children, James, Calista and Malcolm, to our Wycliffe College community,” added Principal Andrews.
