DID YOU KNOW?
The Anglican Church in Yukon is a large and important part of Yukon history. Many of our people are part of what is known in Yukon as the “Colourful 5%” Most people know about Isaac Stringer—the Bishop who ate his boots, but did you know:
- That Robert Bowen nearly drove his fellow passengers crazy learning how to play the concertina (a newly invented instrument at that time) as he crossed the Atlantic on his way to be a missionary to Yukon
- That Robert MacDonald performed his own wedding
- That Richard Martin, a Gwitch’in minister served the Church in Moosehide for many years while he was blind.
- That Bishop Bompas tried to prevent his own consecration as Bishop because he had been in the north so long he was uncomfortable around white people.
- That an Anglican Missionary discovered gold in the Klondike 30 years before the Gold Rush began but said nothing for fear of harming the First Nation people.
Come and be part of our story. The Bishop of Yukon, Larry Robertson (who arrived in the north in 1976 and found home), would love to talk to you about the
Ministry of Presence. Come and be part of what God is currently doing in the Diocese of Yukon
