Alumni, faculty, and staff of Wycliffe College were saddened today to learn of the death of Professor Emeritus Dr Richard N. Longenecker. Dr. Longenecker—who made his home in Brantford, ON—died Monday, June 7, 2021. Predeceased by his wife Fran (2016), he was in his 91 st year. Richard Longenecker taught at Wycliffe College for 22 years (1972–1994) and was our Ramsay Armitage Professor of New Testament. On Monday, May 17, 2021, Wycliffe College will hold its annual Convocation for the conferral of doctoral and masters degrees conjointly with the University of Toronto. Due to current COVID restrictions, all aspects of the ceremony will be held virtually. Honourand Bishop Annie Ittoshat will preach at the Convocation Chapel Service. On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at 12:00 noon (ET), Wycliffe will host a special ceremony to confer Honorary Doctorates on the Most Rev’d Mouneer Anis, the Rt Rev’d Annie Ittoshat, and the Rt Rev’d Stephen Leung. Wycliffe College is pleased to announce that Dr Mark Elliott, Professorial Fellow, has been appointed to Full Status at the Graduate Centre for Theological Studies at the Toronto School of Theology. This new designation means that he is now available to supervise students doing doctoral research in the fields of Patristics, Historical Theology and Biblical Interpretation, and biblical-theological hermeneutics here at Wycliffe. Late last month, when the Forum for Theological Exploration announced their selection of 16 scholars to receive support for their PhD or ThD program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies, Wycliffe PhD student Michelle Yu was named among the chosen. As a recipient of the Fellowship for Latino/a, Asian, and First Nations Doctoral Students, Michelle will be awarded a living stipend up to $25,000 to help further her studies beyond the coursework stage. Congratulations to the three Wycliffe College students who received 2021-22 Toronto School of Theology (TST) Board of Trustees awards. Kit Man (Kimberly) Lai, conjoint PhD, has received the Marjorie Watson Powles Award. This award was established by the Board of Trustees in 2002 in honour of Dr. Marjorie Watson Powles to recognize her contribution to the lives and work of women active in the church. The award is available to a TST student who actively engages in community and congregational life, demonstrates academic excellence, and brings a feminist perspective to the study of theology
Professor Tom Power is to retire at the end of August 2021. His departure caps a 23-year appointment at Wycliffe as a member of the History faculty, as Graduate Studies Coordinator, and as Theological Librarian at the John W. Graham Library. Tom hails from Ireland, where he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He has taught history at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Toronto.
